Tameside terror raid girl, 16, released without charge

A 16-year-old girl arrested by counter-terrorism police in Greater Manchester has been released without charge.

The girl was detained alongside a 16-year-old boy on Monday in Mossley, Tameside.

Two addresses in the Hanover Street and Spring Mill Drive were searched by the North West Counter Terrorism Unit.

The boy remains in custody but no further action will be taken against the girl, Greater Manchester Police said.

They had both been held on suspicion of being concerned in the commission, preparation or instigation of an act of terrorism.

But, the BBC understands the raids were not connected to Islamist extremism or have any international connections.

The investigation was believed to be focussing on items being bought online.

In a statement, police said: “There is no intelligence or evidence to suggest that communities within the Mossley or Greater Manchester area are, or were, at risk in relation to this investigation.”
