British Muslim Initiative

Founded in 2007 by former members of the Muslim Brotherhood-controlled Muslim Association of Britain, the British Muslim Initiative (BMI) is a front group for Hamas in the UK. Its President is Mohammed Sawalha, a fugitive Hamas commander whom the BBC reports is “said to have masterminded much of Hamas’s political and military strategy.” Other BMI officials include Anas al-Tikriti, another Hamas supporter with close political and familial links to the Muslim Brotherhood; Azzam al-Tamimi, a “Hamas special envoy” who has expressed a desire to conduct a suicide bombing; Mohammed Kozbar, who has called for the destruction of Israel; and Ismail Patel, also an outspoken advocate for Hamas.

The BMI was the chief organiser of the 2008 IslamExpo, an event funded by the Qatari regime. Then Minister of Communities and Local GovernmentHazel Blears said of IslamExpo: “I was clear that because of the views of some of the organisers, and because of the nature of some of the exhibitors, this was an event that no Minister should attend. Organisers like Anas al-Tikriti, who believes in boycotting Holocaust Memorial Day. Or speakers like Azzam Tamimi, who has sought to justify suicide bombing. Or exhibitors like the Government of Iran.”

Leading figures of the BMI were also behind the launch of an Arabic-language television channel in 2006, Al Hiwar TV, which was censured by Ofcom in 2009 for giving a platform to “praise for Molotov bombs, and Qassam rockets which in the months before the programme was broadcast, had been responsible for a number of deaths and injuries.”
